Vintage Vigan

12.28.2011 by Leah // 2 Comments

Before I write the travelogue of our recent 3-day trip in Ilocos, let me share with you the photos I took when we went to stroll around the famed Calle Crisologo in the heart of Vigan, south of Ilocos.   This is just a preview of the many other wonderful places we went to see there.

Calle Crisologo boasts of many old houses that dates back to the Spanish period (or the period when the Philippines is still under Spain’s rule).   If you love preserved houses and shopping for souvenirs and the best of Ilocos products (that means longganisa, abel iloco, native home decors and furnitures!), Calle Crisologo will offer you the best of both.

Brick houses are beautifully preserved.  Some have been turned into souvenir shops, without desecrating the history behind the houses:

It was also delightful to look at the many items for sale there – from foodstuff to weaved items to carved items and furniture:

Calle Crisologo (also known as the Vigan Heritage Village), with its antique streetscape, is also perfect for postcard pictures.   I saw photographers carrying around heavy cameras and taking pictures everywhere.   This made me wish I have already the Panasonic Lumix LX5 with me (still in our wish list) so I could take better pictures hehe.

Still, our very basic camera (Samsung ES70) did not disappoint and gave me good pictures just when I need them – like these:

We absolutely enjoyed our time there even if it was in the heat of the afternoon that we took a stroll.   We opted not to take a callesa and instead toured the place by foot.

Oh, we saw this at the end of the street and almost ate here cos it’s my favorite chicken restaurant in town haha!

I hope you enjoyed our picture tour   =)    This is just one part of Vigan that we visited.  There’s more not just from Vigan but from other provinces in Ilocos that we visited.  Will post them as soon as I finish choosing the pictures to go with the travel journal  =)

To My Father By Georgia Harkness A giant pine, ma To My Father
By Georgia Harkness

A giant pine, magnificent and old
Stood staunch against the sky and all around
Shed beauty, grace and power.
Within its fold birds safely reared their young.
The velvet ground beneath was gentle,
and the cooling shade gave cheer to passers by.
Its towering arms a landmark stood, erect and unafraid,
As if to say, “Fear naught from life’s alarms”.
It fell one day.
Where it had dauntless stood was loneliness and void.
But men who passed paid tribute – and said,
“To know this life was good,
It left it’s mark on me. Its work stands fast”.
And so it lives. Such life no bonds can hold –
This giant pine, magnificent and old.

To our shelter and safety while he lived, we miss you so much.
